An eighth planet, Kepler-90i, has been found in a distant solar system, matching our own in numbers. Even more amazing, it is machines not humans that made the discovery. NASA (美国国家航空航天局) joined with Google to announce the finding. This eighth planet orbits the star known as Kepler-90.
The Kepler planet-hunting satellite has been searching the stars for distant worlds using Google’s AI system. Google used data from NASA’s special planet-hunting device to find exact place of Kepler-90i. Google used the data to develop a computer program with machine learning. This means it can learn and improve itself without a programmer telling it to do so. The program carefully studies planetary signals that are so weak that it would take humans years to examine them.
The discovery of a system similar to our own raises hopes of finding alien life elsewhere in the universe. The Kepler-90 planets have a similar configuration (构造) to our solar system, with small planets orbiting close to their star and the larger planets found farther away. According to NASA, this shows for the first time that distant star systems can be home to ‘families as large as our own.’
The new planet, Kepler-90i estimated to be about 30 percent larger than Earth, is “not a place you’d like to visit,” said Andrew Vanderburg, astronomer and NASA Sagan Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of Texas, Austin. “It’s probably rocky, and doesn’t have a thick atmosphere. And, it’s about as hot as Mercury.”
Further studies have been able to find some of these planet’s atmospheres, and the Google AI have been used to look through this data to find the possible worlds where it’s suitable for human living.  At the time, the researchers, led by the University of Arizona, said the possibility of life on planets around a star of this kind cannot be dismissed.
58. Kepler-90i would not have been found so early without ________.
A. Google’s AI system     B. NASA’s planet-hunting device
C. a Google programmer D. the Kepler plane-hunting satellite
59. Which statement is right about the Kepler-90i?
A. It’s a place worth visiting. B. It has a smaller size than Earth.
C. It’s unsuitable for human living. D. It has a thicker atmosphere than Earth.
60. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To discuss whether life is possible on other planets.
B. To inform us of the newly-found planet Kepler-90i.
C. To convince us of the role AI plays in scientific research.
D. To encourage more scientists to carry out further studies.

It is a question people have been asking for ages—is there a way to turn back the aging process?
For centuries, people have been looking for a “fountain of youth.” The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink from its waters, you will not become old. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León searched for waters with magical powers in the early 1500s. But what he found instead is the American State of Florida.
Researchers in New York did not find a fountain of youth in fact, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears the answer may be hidden right between your eyes, in an area called the hypothalamus (丘脑下部).The hypothalamus is part of your brain. It controls important activities within the body, including growth, reproduction and the way we process (处理) food.
Researchers at New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that hypothalamus stem cells (干细胞) also influence how fast aging takes place in the body. What are stem cells? They are simple cells that can develop into specialized cells, like blood or skin cells. Stem cells can also repair damaged parts in the body.
Professor Dongsheng Cai was the lead researcher in a study on aging in mice. Cai explains in the Journal Nature what they found. “Aging speed can be controlled by a particular place in the body, which is the hypothalamus. And it can be controlled by a particular type of cells, which are hypothalamus stem cells. I think these findings are quite interesting.”
He adds that when the hypothalamus starts aging, so does the body. “So when hypothalamus function is decreasing, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, this protection against the aging development is lost. It finally leads to aging.”
Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate (激活) the hypothalamus in mice. They did this by putting stem cells from younger mice into middle-aged animals. Later, the researchers examined mice and tested for changes in behavior. They also looked for changes in the strength of the animals’ muscles and the way they worked. The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals.
Cai says when hypothalamus stem cells, which were derived from young mice was put into middle-aged mice, the mice aged slowly and they also have increased the length of their lives.
But these results were just from studying mice in a lab. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? The next step is to see if the anti-aging effects also work in human beings.
61. Juan Ponce de León’s story was mentioned in order to show ________.
A. the efforts he made to discover Florida
B. the fruitless work to find the magical fountain
C. the non-stop search for the way to stay young
D. the impossible existence of “fountain of youth”
62.The hypothalamus has control over activities EXCEPT________.
A. growth B. reproduction    C. aging process D. food production
63. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Stem cells are specialized cells which can repair damaged parts.
B. Aging is the result of function loss of hypothalamus stem cells.
C. The strength of the animals’ muscles slows the process of aging.
D. Aging speed is controlled by stem cells instead of hypothalamus.
64. The underlined words “were derived from” probably means “________”.
A. came from B. changed from C. resulted from D. developed from
D
Mike licked the last of the chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and left for the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet (游泳比赛).
When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and fast. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won the first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.
“Congratulations, son,” his father said. His mom gave him a hug, even though he was all wet through. With a sweet smile and a wave, he took his towel and left to change.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike enjoyed his favorite ice cream flavor before they left home. Mike remembered that the last time he had won a race, he also ate chocolate chip ice cream first. Maybe he’d win again. As Mike climbed out the pool, his teammates patted him on the back. He’s taken first place again in his race.
As it turned out, Mike decided to have some chocolate chip ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets that came up. He began to think of it as his lucky charm (吉祥物). His parents didn’t think it was a great idea, but Mike argued that he needed to eat it to win.
After several months of placing in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling undefeated. And he wouldn’t admit it, but he was also starting to feel a little uncomfortable. All that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer’s figure.
It didn’t take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place – and then third – and then last place in his races. The lucky chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.
On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, I think we need to talk about this. We all love ice cream, but it’s got lots of fat and sugar in it, and it’s not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Maybe it’s time to quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming.”
Mike went to the swim meet sadly, and didn’t perform well. His father offered to go running with him a few days a week to help him feel better and strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim practices.
It was the last meet of the season, and Mike was not sure what to expect. He’d been training hard with his dad, and staying away from the rich desserts he enjoyed so much. He felt healthy again, but he didn’t know if he still had any speed in the pool.
As he jumped into the water, he kicked his legs and stretched his arms as far as he could. He made the turn at the end of the lane (泳道) perfectly, and was feeling strong. This race was a long one, so Mike tried to keep his energy level up even as he began feeling tired.
Whenever he came up for a breath, he could see he was gaining on the boy ahead of him in the next lane. Feeling determined to pass him, Mike found the power in his muscles to push ahead, and as his hand touched the edge of the pool, the race was over. He lifted his swim goggles (护目镜) off his head and looked at the times on the electronic board. He knew he wasn’t last, but what was his time?
His jaw dropped as he realized he had beaten his own best time, and everyone else’s too. Mike had won his race. The audience and his teammates cheered loudly, and his parents were grinning from ear to ear. “Hey champ, let’s go grab some of your favorite ice cream and celebrate!” said his father.
“Thanks, Dad, but I’ll pass on the ice cream; it’s not such a lucky charm after all!”
65. Why did Mike consider the ice cream his lucky charm?
A. The ice cream had some kind of magic.
B. The ice cream made him feel quite good.
C. He won his race after he ate the ice cream.
D. He was strong and fast after he ate the ice cream.
66. What happened to Mike when he kept eating the ice cream?
A. He became undefeated and gained confidence.
B. He won first place in every race he took part in.
C. He practiced swimming less frequently than before.
D. He gained weight, lost strength and failed his races.
67. The real reason behind Mike’s winning was that ________.
A. he took his lucky charm along with him all the time
B. he was strong-minded and had a talent for swimming
C. he swam well and trained hard to get into good shape
D. he received encouragement from his parents all the way
68. Which of the following can best describe Mike?
A. caring and cheerful B. friendly and open-minded
C. stubborn and selfish D. determined and hard-working
69. The passage is meant to tell us_______.
A. well begun is half done B. luck is one half of success
C. pride goes before a fall D. success comes from hard work
70. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Magical Power of Love B. Mike’s Lucky Ice Cream

The findings from a new report by the Pew Research Center of Washington D.C. show that Americans are concerned about new technology. They are worried that machines, including robots, will take over work now done by humans.
About 75 percent of Americans questioned by Pew say automation (自动化) will make income gap larger between the rich and the middle class and poor. And 64 percent of people expect automation to be so common in America that people will face difficulty finding things to do with their lives.
Some of the concerns about technology come from a distrust about whether machines will always make the right decision. Pew said many Americans believe humans have better judgement in dealing with complex matters—or when there is not one clear answer.
One example is selecting a person for a job. Three-quarters of Americans say they will not want to apply for a job that uses a computer program to choose the most qualified person.
Americans have similar doubts about riding in a car without a driver. The Pew Research Center finds that 56 percent of Americans will not ride in a driverless car. Fifty-nine percent say they will not use a robot caregiver.
Most Americans want the government to limit automation. For example, 87 percent support a requirement that all driverless vehicles have a human in the driver’s seat who can take control when needed. And 85 percent want to limit machines to mostly doing jobs that are dangerous for humans. About 33 percent of Americans believe that their own jobs are threatened by automation. “About one in five said they knew someone whose hours were cut, or whose jobs were lost all together because of automation. And only 25 percent expect more jobs to come from automation,” said Pew.
Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook, spoke last May to graduating seniors from Harvard University in Massachusetts. His talk focused on the uncertain future facing young people.
“Our generation will have to deal with tens of millions of jobs replaced by automation like self-driving cars and trucks,” Zuckerberg told the graduates. Zuckerberg said young people will have to find projects that will bring both jobs and direct benefits to the people of the world. He said in his speech that 300,000 people worked to put a man on the moon, and millions of people built the Hoover Dam as well as other great projects over the last 100 years. Zuckerberg also said, “Now, it’s our turn to do great things. I know you’re probably thinking, ‘I don’t know how to build a dam or get a million people take part in anything.’ But let me tell you a secret. No one does when they begin. Ideas don’t come out fully formed. They only become clear as you work on them. You just have to get started!”

As is shown in the graph, the number of people who go on adventure vacations has witnessed a sharp increase from about 100,000 in 2013 to about 600,000 in 2017. (30词)
Various reasons lie behind this trend. For one thing, by taking adventure vacations, we challenge ourselves and get close to nature, which serves as a break from daily routine. For another, getting involved in different adventurous activities offers us valuable chances to acquire knowledge, thus broadening our horizons and enriching our life.
When taking on such adventure challenges, you have to make full preparations. To begin with, it is a must to do some homework about your destination and stay informed of the latest regional weather forecasts. In addition, take your first-aid kid in case you become ill. Last but not least, it’s strongly recommended that you should avoid going on adventures alone and keep in touch with your family.

W:I’ve decided to leave.?
M:Leave?
W:Yes.?
M:Oh, no. Is it because we’re moving out of London?
W:Well, yes. But there are other reasons.?
M:I see you never liked working here?
W:No, no. I’ve enjoyed working here, but……???
M:But what?
W:Well, I haven’t had time for other things. I’ve worked here for four years. And I’d like to do something different.?
M:What do you mean, something different?
W:I want to travel. You know, I have never been to other countries.?
M:Haven’t you?
W:No, I haven’t. I want to live abroad and learn to speak a different language.?
M:Well, what can I say? I’m really sorry. But I understand.?
W:Thank you, Tom.?

W:Dad, what will we have for dinner?
M:I don’t know. Maybe fried fish, chicken soup and……???
W:Oh, no, I’m tired of such things now.?
M:I’m sorry. But that is the only thing I can cook. What do you want to have then?
W:I do wish Mom were at home. Why don’t we go and eat out for a change?
M:Oh, that’s a good idea. I like Kentucky Fried Chicken very much.?
W:Dad, you always talk about fried chicken. Let’s have something different. I’d like to go to McDonald’s this time.?
M:OK then. You’ll drive, won’t you?
W:No, I’m a bit tired today. You should drive.?
M:OK, OK. I always do things like that. I hope your Mom will be back soon. Ah here we are.
W:Dad, what would you like to have? I’d like a hamburger.?
M:I want one, too. And some French fries, Jill?
W:Please buy me some salad instead. And a glass of Coke. OK?
M:Hamburger, salad, and a glass of Coke. Is that all for you, Jill?
W:Right, and give me an ice cream, too. I’ll go and find the seats.?
M:And I’ll get some vegetables for myself, and a coffee.???

W:Andy, are you busy at the moment?
M:Oh, hi. Well, actually I’m expecting an important call from the office any minute but go ahead
W:I’m sorry, but it’s really important. It’s about the car. It was broken into last night.
M:Oh, no!
W:I want to know if you saw or heard anything.?
M:Did I see anything? Where?
W:In the road. Did you see anybody looking suspicious?
M:No, I don’t think I looked out of the window.?
W:Can you remember if you heard anything? They can’t have done it completely silently. I came back late from a party and I parked it at about 11:30, and then I had a shower and went to bed.?
M:No, I’m sorry. What have they taken?
W:Well, this morning I found the driver’s window smashed. There’s glass everywhere, and the CD player has gone.?
M:How annoying! Is anything else missing?
W:Well, it could have been worse. Luckily, there wasn’t much in the car anyway.?
